A prospect who has really made waves as the season has progressed, Lindberg is a dependable player in all three zones and is particularly strong in the face-off circle.
—————

#77. Jerome Gauthier-Leduc | D | Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL)

Good sized defenseman who really capitalized on an increased role with one of the better teams in the QMJHL this season.
#78. Julian Melchiori | D | Newmarket (CCHL)

Date of Birth: December 6th, 1991

Weight: 186lbs.

Season Statistics: Regular Season | 39GP 7G 16A 23P 16PIM

TSR Midterm Rank: NR | Position Rank: 23rd Defensemen
League Rank: 1st CCHL | Country Rank: 37th Canada

Melchiori is a big defenseman who hasn’t quite filled in his 6’3″ frame yet. He’s made significant progress this season as a late 91 and will be attending UMass-Lowell next season. Melchiori has a bit of a choppy first couple of steps which need some refinement, but his top speed is more then adequate for a big player. Has some good offensive instincts and is effective on the powerplay. A risky pick at this point, but there is a considerable amount of upside for a team willing to be patient with him.

—————

#79. Patrik Nemeth | D | AIK J20

A big Swedish defenseman, Nemeth is one of the only bright hopes in a year that is looking to be fairly bleak defensively for the Swedes. Offensively, Nemeth’s upside is limited, but his combination of strong positional play and a willingness to play a physical brand of hockey are two strengths that he excels at.

—————

#80. Freddie Hamilton | C | Niagara (OHL)

TSR Midterm Rank: NR | Position Rank: 53rd Forwards
League Rank: 24th OHL | Country Rank: 38th Canada

Hamilton is a player who doesn’t have high end skills, but works hard for his success. He has good size and is willing to take the puck to the net or stand in front of the net, but is also adept on the half boards. Hamilton still has a lot of room for improvement, but his strong hockey IQ and ability to play a solid two-way game are two of the main components why people are starting to give him some attention.

#81. Michael Bournival | C | Shawinigan (QMJHL)

League Rank: 7th QMJHL | Country Rank: 39th Canada

Bournival was a pleasant surprise in Shawinigan this season, meeting expectations after a strong rookie campaign a year ago. His size will be a bit of a concern, but his elusiveness on the ice and good offensive ability are two assets to his game. He has a good work ethic and contributed nicely on a Canadian Under 18 team that underachieved this Spring.

—————

#82. Justin Holl| D | Minnetonka (HS-Minnesota)

League Rank: 5th HS-Minnesota | Country Rank: 23rd USA

A pretty raw player at this point, but certainly not lacking any upside. Holl is a very good skater who has a lot of upside which will hopefully be developed as he embarks on a career at the University of Minnesota. Holl was one of the premier defensemen in Minnesota High School Hockey this season, and his offensive skills should help to ease his transition to the NCAA.

—————

#83. Justin Shugg | LW | Windsor (OHL)

Shugg has flown under the radar on a loaded Windsor team, despite quietly being one of the team’s most reliable offensive producers. He has great offensive instincts and good finish in the offensive zone, but his awkward stride, lack of size and questionable competitiveness level will limit the impact he can have at the next level.

—————

#84. Mark Visentin | G | Niagara (OHL)

Visentin is a good sized goalie who has a strong technical game. He faced a lot of shots this season on a rebuilding Ice Dogs team, but managed to really pick up his game after limping through his rookie season last year. Consistency is an issue for Visentin and he can be prone to losing position and giving up a soft goal, but with continued development, he could be a quality goaltending prospect long term.

—————

#85. Brett Bulmer | LW | Kelowna (WHL)

Bulmer really developed in his first full WHL season with Rockets after only suiting up in 3 contests a year ago. Bulmer is a lanky player who brings a lot of energy to the game and can play in a variety of different roles. He does have some good skill which should develop as he is pressed into a more offensive role in the next couple of seasons.

#86. Matt Mackenzie | D | Calgary (WHL)

The third year Hitmen defenseman really took some major strides forward this season, increasing his offensive production three fold while still providing a steadying force on the Calgary blue line. His exceptional play in the playoffs could have some teams considering Mackenzie even higher then this, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him sneak his way up the draft board a little higher in June.

—————

#87. Victor Ohman | C | Malmo J20 (SuperElit)

It’s been a bit of an interesting season for Ohman, as some had him pegged as a potential contender for a first round pick from the outset. Ohman played on a poor Malmo club this season, but his physical play and ability to find the back of the net are both tools that translate well to the next level.

—————

#88. Louis Domingue | G | Quebec (QMJHL)

League Rank: 8th QMJHL | Country Rank: 44th Canada

One of the more highly touted goaltenders from the QMJHL in recent seasons, Domingue had a decent season, splitting time between the Moncton Wildcats and later Montreal Juniors after being dealt there in the Kelsey Tessier transaction. He’s got very good size and is pretty athletic for a big goalie. His glove hand is a bit of a problem and he overplays it which results in getting beaten upstairs.

—————

Kind of stagnated a bit during a second season with Shattuck St. Mary’s, but there is still a lot of potential for the lanky forward to develop.
Thomas had a breakout season with the Generals, finishing 7th in the OHL goal scoring race after finding the back of the net 41 times. He’s a quick skater with one of the better shots in the draft and can score from almost anywhere in the offensive zone. While he competes hard for a small player, his lack of strength hinders his ability to beat defenders at the OHL level, and could be a major concern for his ability to be an offensive forward at the NHL level.

A lot more was expected from Stone this year, as many felt he could even work himself into the end of the first round with a quality season.
Archibald concludes TSR’s rankings after surprisingly going undrafted a year ago. There is a lot of talk that the 19 year old will be a mid-round selection this year, however, after providing steady play for the Colts all season long.
Recently, I had the opportunity to take in a CCHL game between the Newmarket Hurricanes and the St. Michael’s Buzzers. For those of you who don’t know, the CCHL is one of two newly created leagues (the other being the OJHL) that have replaced the former Central Ontario Tier Two circuit known as the OPJHL. Being my first Tier Two game in quite some time, I was a bit surprised at how different the pace was from major junior hockey, but there were a couple of players who were notable stand outs, and will embark on hockey careers at a higher level in the next couple of years. Here is a boxscore from the game: http://cchl.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=1089794

LD Julian Melchiori | 1991L | 6’3” | 195lbs | 13GP 4G 10A 14P +3 8PIM

NHL: 2010 Eligible

NCAA: UMass-Lowell (2010)

Melchiori was probably the second best player in this game, behind Lessio, and you can tell that he’s a player with some solid upside. Originally a 14th round pick of the Oshawa Generals in 2007, Melchiori has steadily progressed into a quality two-way defenseman this season. He’s got good size, but could stand to add a couple of pounds to his frame. He’s a pretty mobile player, his top speed is very good, but he’ll need to work on his first few steps and evening out his stride, which is a bit choppy. He competes hard on the ice, makes good decisions and is more than willing to play the body. I also like the amount of poise he has. He sees the ice fairly well and is effective on the powerplay, with a good shot and ability to walk the line. Overall, Melchiori should be able to contribute for UMass-Lowell next season, and he could even be a late round NHL pick this year, as there is a lot of untapped potential with him.

RW (LS) Chad Sumsion | 1990 | 6’1” | 200lbs | 13GP 10G 10A 20P +2 10PIM

NHL: 2010 Eligible

NCAA: Bowling Green (2010)

The leading scorer of Newmarket, Sumsion just recently committed to Bowling Green for the 2010/2011 season. After coming to Newmarket a season ago from the Stratford Cullitons, Sumsion has been a very productive forward for the Hurricanes. His strength as a player is definitely from the has marks in. He’s pretty dangerous in tight, and has a slick skill set that he utilizes to make things happen in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, he is a very average skater, and his transition to the NCAA game will likely be extremely hampered by this, so he’ll be a player that will need a couple of seasons before he is able to play a bigger role at Bowling Green.

LD Joel Hanley | 1991 | 6’0” | 185lbs | 13GP 3G 11A 14P +2 6PIM

NHL: 2010 Eligible

NCAA: UMass-Amherst (2010)

Another Hurricane that will be leaving to join the NCAA ranks next season is offensive defenseman Joel Hanley. After getting some NHL Draft interest last season, and even making NHLCS’s players to watch list, Hanley went undrafted in June. He’s not an overly intimidating figure, and he doesn’t play a very physical style, but he’s a very calm and composed defenseman. He’s doesn’t have great speed, but he’s very aware when he has the puck and makes good decisions. Offensively, he’s pretty dangerous, and is especially effective on the powerplay. His positioning is pretty solid, but he will need to improve his strength to play in the NCAA next year.

ST. MICHAEL’S BUZZERS

LW Lucas Lessio | 1993 | 6’1” | 187lbs | 13GP 12G 13A 25P -1 26PIM

NHL: 2011 Eligible

NCAA: Michigan (2011)

Arugably the top 1993 player in OHL territory, Lessio is easily the best pro prospect playing in the CCHL right now. After being selected by the Niagara Ice Dogs with the 7th overall pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, Lessio elected to play for the Buzzers and pursue a scholarship at Michigan. The Oshawa Generals even acquired his rights in an attempt to lure him to the OHL, but at this point, it looks like Lessio is committed to the NCAA route. On the ice, he’s not the most flashy player, but he’s a very effective one. He’s got good size, and he’s a player that competes extremely hard on the ice. He’ll go to battle for loose pucks in the corner, and he’s not afraid to take a hit to make a play, or dish out a hit when he has the opportunity. His skating is above average, and could use some work, but he does a good job of protecting the puck in stride. Lessio has a pretty good set of hands, but his poise could use some work. Sometimes he overthinks the game when he has the puck, and he doesn’t have the same natural creativity that high end goal scorers have. His niche is definitely driving the puck to the net. He has a very good shot, and he has a knack of finding loose pucks around the goal mouth, which is where he can make a big impact. Overall, while he’s still a bit raw on the whole, there is a lot to like about Lessio, and he’s probably a top half first rounder in 2011 at this point. While he will likely be returning to St. Michael’s next season, he could really stand to benefit from a year in the USHL, playing at a higher level of competition with better talent around him.

LC Daniel Ciampini | 1990 | 6’0” | 178lbs | 15GP 8G 19A 27P +5 16PIM

NHL: 2010 Eligible

NCAA: Uncommitted

The captain of the Buzzer’s, Ciampini has really exploded this season on a very weak St. Michael’s hockey team. After being selected by the Peterborough Petes back in the third round of the 2006 OHL Priority Selection, Ciampini has kept his NCAA options open to this point, as he has struggled to make a big impact in tier two. This season has definitely been a break out one for Ciampini, with an increased role, as well as playing alongside Lessio. Nothing about his game really sticks out too much, he’s solid in both ends and has the ability to make things happen in the offensive zone, but his role will be limited in the NCAA, if he gets a scholarship there. He does work hard, and isn’t afraid to play a physical game, so he could be an effective energy forward for an NCAA team in the future.
